In a Snap: Replacing a Broken Door Handle

All Toyota vehicles and their parts are designed to give the maximum satisfaction to every customer. Everything has its purpose, even the most lowly parts that one may think of. One of these is the Camry Door Handle. One may think of it as a very small aspect of his/her Camry, as it serves only a small function: opening the Camry. It also seems to contribute little to the overall performance of the Camry. But door handles are necessary tools that the authorities have decreed. They are a standard item in every production and experimental car design.

As a device, door handles are necessary in facilitating one's entry inside and outside the vehicle. Entering and exiting is comfortable with door handles around, so there is a premium attached to their being reliable 24/7, all the time rather than just being pleasing to the eyes. But what happens when one's door handles become broken because of misuse or they become brittle with age? The Camry door handle is fastened into the inside of the car's door. Fixing and replacing the door handle is easy, even if one is a newcomer in the field of fixing things or an avid "do-it-yourselfer," as long as one follows these simple instructions:

1. Removing the door panel. This the first step. Start with the window fully up. There are five (5) screws and two (2) pins to be removed. With a Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws under: the inside edge of the door (2 screws); the door handle (2); underneath the light (1); and underneath the mesh cover of the middle of the door (1). The pins are located on the outer edge of the door. Just press them with a screwdriver and they will be easily removed by pulling them out of the door.

2. Removing the door trim. Insert a flat-edged screwdriver between the pull handle and trim. Then, pull with your fingers around the outer edge of the trim to pry (with a rocking motion) it loose.

3. Removing the exterior door handle. With the door trim removed, there is a plastic liner inside. Remove that also (be sure to replace it back when one is finished!). Remove the bolts inside with a ratchet set (with a 10 mm attachment). Once the bolts are removed, the handle can already be moved around. But there is one more set of bolt and rod inside to be removed. After which, one should be able to pull out the old door handle.

4. Attaching the new door handle. Fit the new door handle into place. From the left, there are four (4) lock bolts to be attached back in. Start re-attaching the first two (from the left), then with the next two with the ratchet set.

Test if the door handle fits perfectly. With the screwdriver mimicking the bar which engages when the door is closed, pull the handle. The screwdriver should be released. When everything is working well, start replacing all the parts removed (start with the last removed part i.e. the plastic covering).

With these easy steps, replacing your door handle would be a breeze.
